Ming's "Healthy" Bak Kut Teh 肉骨茶

Review and Photographs by: WCLee
*Our first review! Here's to many more!

Bak Kut Teh, who doesn't love it.
It's basically a Chinese delicacy, which after much thought and comparison, I think it originated from Malaysia, so it's pretty much a homegrown dish (correct me if I'm wrong!). Dubbed as the most famous type of Bak Kut Teh would be in Klang. Everyone thinks its the best there. A suitable translation for this dish would be Pork Bone Stew. It's pork meat, innards, mushrooms, vegetable, tau fu pok (fried beancurd), fried fritters (Yau Char Koay) and sometimes pork blood in a claypot with herbal soup and soy sauce. (So it's a pot of pork, get it?)

So there was a new store (or rather, re-opening) of a restaurant in SS15, and seeing the ads passed outside INTI college, we were intrigued, even more so, the ad claimed to have a promo set meal comprising of rice, fried fritters (Yau Char Koay), a glass of Chinese tea all for only RM10!

Hence our lunch trip to Ming's Healthy Bak Kut Teh.
(Note: Upon later Googling, I found out that the shop was actually known as Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh, with their famous string-tied Bak Kut Teh. I guess that business failed. [Foursquare Link]
But the interior looked exactly the same! Only now there was an open-style kitchen.

The wait wasn't long, but the waiter did not allow us to customize our Bak Kut Teh, perhaps due to the lunch promo. I would have liked to request for more pork and no intestines.

Lunch is served!

The portions were reasonable, and there were generous servings of lettuce to go with. Not bad.
Pretty standard stuff, what you would expect from a typical Bak Kut Teh.

Meat.

However, the pieces of meat were not enough for my liking, however, the Tau Fu Pok served was more than usual. Perhaps this was what they meant by being "Healthy". Less meat, more veggie and tau fu pok.

Some think of this type of meat as the best. Fat on top, meat at the bottom.

Well, mixing the sauce and rice and eating it with vegetables and pork, topped off with some You Char Koay, was nice. The meat was not too hard, nor was it too soft to the point of it feeling raw. However, the herbal soup tasted a bit too plain and light. My other lunch mates said so as well. The herbal taste wasn't strong enough to give that desired oomph, and maybe a little more soy sauce couldn't hurt. The rice could have been softer, and the Chinese tea was nothing to shout about.

Overall, given the promo price of RM10, it's worth it. The amounts of Taf Fu Pok and Lettuce were enough, while I felt the innards given were a bit too much (or that's just me, since I don't eat innards) Yet, the pork given wasn't enough, and the light and plain herbal soup was not satisfying enough to calm one's desire for Bak Kut Teh. Perhaps this is why it is considered "Healthy" Bak Kut Teh. My friend from Klang felt that it was a world of difference with the original Bak Kut Teh. However, that being said, this restaurant may appeal to individuals who've always found this delicacy too strong to like. They also serve Gourmet coffee from Mister Coffee too!

Needless to say, restaurant is non-halal.
